SKYLER POKORNY, MSW
Above all else, I believe that therapy provides a space for human connection and a unique opportunity to be known. I recognize the courage it takes to be vulnerable and seek guidance during turbulent periods. It is my privilege to be invited into your story and walk alongside you. Countless studies show that the “common factor” in positive, effective therapy is a strong therapeutic relationship, and it is my job to nurture that connection. I strive to provide a comfortable environment as we tackle the uncomfortable together.
Who I am:
I utilize a holistic, strengths-based perspective that pulls from my training in cognitive behavioral–based therapies and acceptance-mindfulness approaches. I am currently a Supervisee in Social Work, which means I am in the process of pursuing official state licensure. Prior to my time at OTC, I have worked in community mental health, refugee mental health, and hospice. I earned my Masters of Social Work at UNC Chapel Hill, which is ranked among the top five programs nationally.
I love working with people who are:
-
Navigating life transitions
-
Exploring their identity (LGBTQIA+ affirming)
-
Living with anxiety, panic disorders, and OCD
-
Processing difficult experiences from their past
I am especially passionate about the intersection of mental health and spirituality/religious identity. This can be a pivotal and overlooked aspect of self which informs how we live and think. I have a high religious literacy in diverse belief systems that is supported by my bachelor’s degree in religious studies.
I’d love to work with you!
