PATRICIA WILKINSON

Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Substance Abuse Professional (DOT approved)

Patricia Wilkinson earned her Master’s Degree in Social Work from Ohio State University in 1976. Patricia works with individuals, couples, and families facing substance abuse, trauma, mood disorders, work difficulties, chronic disease and life transition issues.

I come to the practice of mental health counseling through my personal experiences which were shaped by the necessity of flexibility and change. Throughout my childhood, my dad’s corporate career led my family to living in multiple states and overseas. My high school years were spent in Ireland, where my brother and I had the privilege of being among a small group of American students at an Irish school.

Those years shaped my understanding of the effect that culture has on three things: the development of one’s beliefs, the capacity of people to adapt to change, and the appreciation of others’ personal views. In addition to earning my master’s degree in social work in 1976 from Ohio State University, my professional experience includes working with non-profit organizations, as well as over 20 years of clinical experience. My areas of expertise include working with individuals, couples, and families who are facing substance abuse, trauma, mood disorders, work difficulties, chronic disease, and life transition issues.

I’m personally interested and continually amazed by the positive ways in which animals can assist humans with their individual healing process. I volunteer weekly with Dream Catchers at the Cori Sikich Therapeutic Riding Center in Toano, Virginia where I am constantly amazed by healing energy of animals and the resilience of people who are overcoming challenges in their life.

I am a long-term resident of Virginia, and my home is always occupied by several dogs and cats. I also love to travel with my family and partake in outdoor activities in my free time.
